Geek Out: Skincare Edition

October 20, 2010

I have a secret. I have had horribly persistent acne since I was 16. It hit me late. I got it after most kids were already cleared up from various medications – over-the-counter and prescription.

I tried everything. My family has generously spent at least $4,000 clearing up my skin. Nothing worked. I’ve had microdermabrasion, chemical peels, b-peels, extractions, scar treatment, an overnight bag’s worth of prescriptions, ProActiv, the next new thing, not eating meat, vitamins, not wearing makeup (which was painful), not touching my face, using regular soap – deep breath – I’ve tried e’erythang.

I would clear up for about two weeks and then it would be back…angrier than ever. I’ve worn makeup since the first outbreak in junior year, and I haven’t gone much more than a day without it. It’s hidden pretty well under there, but it affected my life, my self-confidence, my routine in a big way. I wouldn’t go to the gym in the morning – didn’t want to put on make up in the a.m. only to sweat and have to waste another day’s worth in the afternoon. I couldn’t be spontaneous, if I had already washed off my face for the evening, there was no going back.

Needless to say, I found something that worked.

A month and a half ago, I was upset over a recent breakout and wearing a heavy amount of makeup on our regular trip to Albertson’s (Jewel for you midwesterners). I waltzed down the skin/hair/”feminine” aisle while Isaiah picked out our delicious beer choice for the night. (We settled on Flying Dog, if you were curious).

I was sucked in, like the skincare aisle does to me, with cheap promises and bright-colored packaging. I bought this system for $15.99 just on a whim. I was a major skeptic, took about two weeks to see any change.

But in a month, my skin has gone from yikes to needing a tinted moisturizer everyday instead of cakey foundation. I’m pretty stoked. My scars have all but gone away and my skin tone is even (dry, but even).

I’m not paid, trying a free product or practicing for an infomercial. I was just getting desperate for a solution. And I found one. So if you’re in a similar situation, check it out. Also – if you’re oily and aren’t a big fan of constant powdering – it really changed the whole “texture” of my skin as well.

I just humbly recommend it. That’s all.

I’m not sure about everyone else out there…but all the pretty decorations, DIY projects and photo props wouldn’t have made me feel any prettier if I was worried about showing my “real” face at the wedding. So there – connection established.

So glad you found something that’s working for you!

At almost 30 I can’t accept that i have worse skin now than as a teenager. I seriously thought this would be the magic number when miraculously, i would have flawless, clear skin. Not so, a couple weeks ago I was about to pursue the final straw – accutane – since two of my siblings needed it I don’t know why I ever thought I would be different.

But, before that (which scares me) I’m using a prescription I used when i was 19 and I’m having good results so far.

    Cheers!

DEFINITELY, me too. I always thought after I left teenage-dom it would magically clean up. But no, it’s gotten worse and I’m all Okay guys…it’s not cute anymore, I’m an adult.

yay! Thanks for the recommendation. I will try it.

Which Flying Dog? I love their Raging Bitch, mostly for the name, but a lot of what they do is delish.

very very happy for you! I struggle too and feel like I’ve tried everything and then some. I may have to add this to the CVS basket next time …. I’ve def seen it there before and been uber curious

I know that feeling, when you can’t just “go out of the house” without using some make up bc you just don’t feel confident enough. It’s the absolute worst, and I hate being in my 30s and still dealing with this crap! Recently it’s been ok, usually at least one really bad spot around my period and a few little things here and there, I’m definitely down to a lighter cover up but man…I can’t tell you how often I get skin envy just staring at random women around town!

Keep us posted on how it goes with this new system!

Definitely try it, it had amazing results. Definitely get it…ooh, period. No good. My skin always declares war at my period. Yikes.

Hmmm, I might give that a try. My acne is tons of little bumps across my forehead and occasionally a white head or a honking red pimple on my cheek or chin. Makeup doesn’t do anything to hide my little bumps, because, well, they are bumps. And I would really, really like to have flat skin. So maybe next time I’m in need of product I’ll pick this up. Thanks for the recommendation!

BRB, heading to the store to pick some up.

No, seriously. I’m walking out the door as soon as this comment is posted. Thank you 🙂

good luck on your wedding planning! My wedding was only 4,000, I had a budget of 5,000. But that was over 5 years ago before all these crazy DIY weddings of today. If I would do it over, it would be way different but it’s almost nice to have it all over and done with before the trends. I would be so overwhelmed!

Thanks so much… I know the feeling well. We’re actually shooting for about $5k as well…but have a budget of 10 to work with…so just in case we get a little hypocritical. I mean…

I have had constant breakouts along my T-zone (particularly my chin, which is now terribly scarred) since my late teens. It also hit me late, too. Frustratingly, it continues to this day. I just tried a new facial regime, but it caused blackheads (not normally my problem) instead of clearing things up. Gah.

I actually don’t wear makeup unless I’m going somewhere special or have a special meeting because anything other than a basic hypoallergenic cleanser and Oxy 10 seems to make it break out. I dread summer activities where I have to wear sunscreen because I know I’ll be paying for it with painful zits for the next week.

I’m glad you found something that works!

Dude…for sure. What’s weird is that every time I tried a new medication..the “type” of acne I had would change..from tiny bumps to cysts…to blackheads…it would clear up the original source, but create a whole new type. NUTS.

This is wonderful news! Several of my closest friends have struggling with acne, and it was so hard to watch them all hide their faces (in lots of different ways) until they finally found something that worked. I’ll be recommending this to everyone who hasn’t found their solution!

    • October 23, 2010 12:00 am

Definitely get it…haha. Pass the word along! There are some other suggestions in the comments from some ladies on what worked for them as well!

thats awesome! thats so great it’s so cheap too! also, letrs send each other mixtapes ya!

You and me both. I have had bad acne since age 10. 10! At age 13 my dermatologist even put me on Accutane, dangerous for someone so young, and even that didn’t work.

I am now 28 and while my skin is looking the best it ever has, if I’m not vigilant it will go right back to where it used to be. Benzoyl Peroxide is the only topical substance that will work for me, the same ingredient that’s in the system you bought. Powerful stuff – for me anyway. Most drug store acne medications do not include this ingredient, though, so now I make sure to check before I try something new.

I’m so glad you’re finding something that works! I know exactly what it’s like and it sucks.

    • October 22, 2010 11:59 pm

Definitely agreed…thanks so much! I’m excited as well..Benzoyl Peroxide is definitely powerful stuff..and what’s weird is that every medication I’ve ever been on uses it…and this is the only one that worked..NUTS!

Oh my goodness – this is fantastic news!
I totally feel your pain. I’ve been under a dermatologist’s care since I was 14 or 15. Yeah, I know. My entire life.

Breakouts are rare now, but I still use 2 prescription topicals daily. Products have been getting better through the years so I guess it is logical that an over the counter product would finally be genuinely effective.

You’ll look totally gorgeous in your wedding photos.

Um, just as a footnote to anyone who might be interested, there is a prescription medication called Sulfacet-R that comes in clear or tinted liquid form. I used it for years in my 30s and early 40s instead of makeup.

Thanks so much! Yeah…it can really be kind of debilitating in a weird way…and thanks! Gah – you are so thoughtful, just an awesome person, btw!
