New Things and a Little Bit of a Broken Heart

October 19, 2010

So we lost the contest. You know…the free kick-ass photography contest and day of coordination package? We couldn’t be more crushed. Didn’t I tell you that would happen? Anyways, we got runner-up, second place. If you’re not first, you’re last, right Ricky Bobby? Kidding. They offered us a deal on the packages for being runner-up. They are hella awesome if you’re in the Chicago area: Hanle Productions and SH Weddings. Congratulations to the lucky couple and thanks to Hanle and SH for giving us so much consideration!

Anyways, my heart is lying next to me in an uncountable number of pieces and all I have effort for is to tell you my newest news. I hope that’s forgivable.

I landed a weekly series with the newspaper in town here. It will be the first time my name is print, where it belongs, kidding. The series will be on weddings, beginning with the wedding blog world. After that, budgeting a wedding in Denton and the Dallas area and then on doing the damn thing without going broke in general.

I told you that (news that I’m withholding my excitement about) to tell you this:

  • If you haven’t contacted your local paper and fancy yourself a writer (you do…write a blog, don’t you?) you should check it out…there’s a lot of fascination right now with cheap and still beautiful weddings…you might have similar luck!
  • If you don’t wanna go through all that but have any ideas on things that I should talk about every week, shoot me an email or leave a comment or something.

I know there are some hella creative ideas a-brewing under the surface of this community, I just wanted to share some news in my little piece of the web. The whole reason I went after this gig is to give this community a bigger voice. Stop more brides from falling into the trap out there large enough to catch an average of $30,000 every time someone gets married.

What do you think?

Freaking awesome news! (Not the contest, but the paper!) Holy eff! I hope you guys celebrate with Biggie and Tupac over there. Maybe dance it up in the living room a bit and treat yourselves to something awesome – like a taco. Ok, sorry. I’m starving over here and everything I seem to say comes back to food.

Glad you get to share the badassness of budgeting with Denton!

haha i’m hungry as well…could go for pita pit…

Ugh, sorry that the contest didn’t work out, but I’m so proud of you for putting yourself out there and snagging this writing gig! Good for you, going out and asking for what you want. People don’t do that nearly enough.

thanks katherine! i was actually really nervous, but the editor is like way obsessed with weddings right now so she happened to be all for it…I got lucky.

That’s awesome news about the column! So so cool! Sucks about the photo context though (loving your use of Ricky Bobby quotes though!) xx

Congratulations! I have a little experience with writing for a newspaper, so I know how exciting it can be to see your name in print. It’s awesome that you want to give more press to our niche of wedding planning.

Sorry the contest didn’t work out, but those things are hard to win.

yay! I know you do, that’s so exciting. I’m graduating with a degree in journalism, so it’s about time something happened. jeez…thanks for the consolation, haha…at least they had the contest in the first place so some couple is very very lucky!

Such a cool gig! Are you an English/writing geek like me? 🙂

    • October 19, 2010 2:59 pm

dude, you know it. i am an english geek to a fault…always correcting spelling in texts…mostly just to myself…for the sake of my friendships, haha.

A huge congratulations on seeing your name in print-that’s fantastic! I’m sorry you didn’t win the contest, but I know your wedding is going to be gorgeous and joyous even without the help. After all, you guys are so talented-I can’t wait to see the final product!

    • October 19, 2010 3:33 pm

Thanks so much! You guys are making me blush for real, I’m really bad about compliments, so trying to just say “thank you” and grin and bear it…but you guys really are all so sweet.

That’s great news! Congrats! The wedding industry is so saturated with luxury that I think so many brides are pressured into putting themselves in debt just to have this “perfect” day. Then you talk to them after the big day is done and they wish they eloped and use phrases like, “I wish I didn’t spend $50,000 on one day!” It’s definitely nice to know there are other brides out there that are doing this on a tight budget. Congrats!

    • October 19, 2010 3:34 pm

for SURE. Couldn’t agree more. I talked with a couple brides at my school talking about how they literally just let their coordinator do all the planning…besides color scheme…I was all: “What?!” For the kind of money they’re spending on the wedding, it’s kind of like….at least it should show off who you are as a couple, you know?

    That is SO FANTASTIC!

And I’m incredibly happy you used the word hella. I mean, really.

    • October 19, 2010 7:32 pm

Bah, thanks, Bret! Haha, I love the word hella and use it at any available opportunity.

  12. October 19, 2010 7:56 pm

Congrats about the column!!! And sorry about the contest. At least you have something good to look forward to 🙂

I’m so totally excited for you and your own circulated column! You’re so young an it takes so much creativity and skill to sell your ideas – getting other people on board with your freight train full of material. I am just so amazed at the skills that you already have at your control. I don’t think I would have ever been so poised and professional at your age. I’m very impressed. You rock. No doubt about it.

    Congratulations!!
