Denton-Centric: The Mix

October 9, 2010

It’s about time you knew about the magical place we’re living now, Denton. I’m currently staffed on a magazine with an assignment to write about Denton’s Indie Music Revolution. I chose it. Who wouldn’t? The music culture here in Denton is fierce.

A little background. The University of North Texas has a phenomenal jazz studies program. With graduates that go on to win GRAMMY’s, play on the Saturday Night Live jazz band….Even our university’s One O’Clock Lab Band has been GRAMMY nominated, played in the white house…etc.

Jazz has always been the focus. Which is excellent. But the indie revolution has taken over the spotlight just a little bit.

Our downtown square is…the reason Isaiah and I might be lured away from Chicago to stay…if that says anything. Live music every night, NX35 – our kickass annual music conferette (last year we had The Flaming Lips)…how could you deny this scene? Where else could we go see Sarah Jaffe – indie heartbreaker – DJ a hipster-kid dance party? More on that later…I’ll link to the article when it publishes!

Anyways, here’s a few of our favorites from Denton. Check it out.
