Geek Out: DIY Edition

Geek Out: Wedding Inspiration The DIY Edition

I’ve been geeking out lately over some DIY tutorials around the web. A lot of the tutorials I find are so adorable…but not our style at all. I found a little collection that have been filling my wedding bookmark list for a while now. Enjoy the DIY Edition of Geek Out!

This painted tube wedding decor tutorial is fantastically done. I think it’s so interesting looking and a great way to add some cheap swank to a DIY wedding. I thought it was a nice change of pace from the vintage DIY tutorials that are everywhere. Have I stroked your ego enough, painted-tube-art? I hope so. This one’s from The City Cradle.

Painted Tube Decor Wedding DIY Tutorial

I am so far away from the rice-thrower-level-details of our wedding that I can’t even see it with a telescope. Pretty sure that’s Pluto though…sorry, buddy. Aww…he’s crying…that’s sad. Anyway, this rice-tosser tutorial was on Style Me Pretty recently. Just because our wedding doesn’t have its act together doesn’t mean yours doesn’t right? The tutorial seems so easy it could be done in a day!

DIY Wedding Rice Throwers Tutorial

I have to admit something. Isaiah’s and my collection of cake stands is about as existant as our collection of Precious Moments figurines. I look at cake bars and I think they are wonderful looking. But where in the world do those cake stands come from..and what does the couple do with them after the day? Are they artwork around the new place after the wedding? Anyway, this super-easy and way cute tutorial is from Austin Wedding Blog. They look pretty sustainable too…maybe a good take-home-favor for families or something?

DIY Cake Stand Tutorial Wedding

I have a wedding blog crush on The Wedding Chicks. I shouldn’t really have to explain why…they have awesome freebies, a great shop and way-too-cute content all the time. One of the biggest earners of “awww”s from me. This tutorial is for a DIY wedding cake…I think a small assortment of these might make a way-cute cake topper.

DIY Wedding Cake Tutorial

My great-grandma (celebrating her 91st birthday this year) goes to quilting every week. She has a quilting group that is so marvelously entertaining that Golden Girls can just go off the air…oh wait. Anyways, she taught my cousin and I to sew at around 4 years old and I have always loved sewing. I don’t have time for sewing anymore so much…but I love embroidering and cross stitch. I’m just starting a couple of new projects…and where better to find inspiration than the new, fantastic trend of doing away with patterns and making something crafty-beautiful. I’ve been keeping myself busy…Christmas presents for everyone!

I found this delightful little ditty on June Bug Weddings.

Miniature Embroidered Heart DIY

Okay. Really. Could this be any cuter? From Etsy seller NeaWear.

Flower Embroidery DIY

I love dandelions. I know, I know…so original. Roll your eyes all you want, this embroidery is fantastically simple and beautiful. From Etsy seller lindylou2.

Awesome Dandelion Embroidery DIY

I’m so envious of this embroidery, I want to befriend it just to keep my enemies closer. How jealous are you of this Etsy GeorgicaDesigns find?

Adorable Heart Embroidery Etsy DIY

Oh man, if you don’t sew or cross stitch or knit or embroider already, it’s a way-easy way to express your creativity. If you pick a simple project, too, you can make something beautiful in a day. Enjoy the geek-out fest and if you finish one of the tutorials…props. They are pretty to look at though, eh?

Ooh! I almost forgot! How fusilli of me. Isaiah and I won a wedding giveaway from the fabulous Broke-Ass Bride! More on the freaking fantastic champagne flutes later…In the meantime, we’re having our very own giveaway for a premium wedding website and unlimited paperless stationary for your wedding from Glo. Check it out, the deadline is Friday.

I am so loving these hand stitched needlepoint circles.

  4. October 6, 2010 10:17 am

LOVE this. This is one of the sweetest posts I’ve seen in a while. The use of textiles is marvelous.

  5. October 6, 2010 12:02 pm

Our cake stands came from a local antique fair. I wasn’t able to find any of the milk glass or opaque colored glass stands at a price I was willing to pay (I’m on a budget, yo!), but I have to say that I love, love, love them. They made a very pretty display for the cupcakes at my son’s birthday party, and I’m certain that I will trot them out whenever possible.

I spent about $120 on 4 cake stands, 2 large dessert trays, and several milk glass candy jars, vases, pitchers.

    • October 6, 2010 2:07 pm

You know what, Sarah? We’re already jealous of your budget-savvyness. No need to be waving your fantastic, beautiful finds around in all of our faces. Jeez…kidding.

I’m jealous of your findyness. I think cake stands would be awesome to have. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see past my anchovy-sized apartment for now…where I have ONE cabinet and two square feet of counter space. Someday…I’ll live in a 500 square foot apartment…dream big, right?

I may be wrong, but from the looks of it, some of those cake stands are plastic goblets whose bases are glued to cake plates and then spray-painted orange and yellow. I’d be willing to bet you could make them quickly and easily from inexpensive materials, and then recycle them when you’re done!

With all of my bridesmaids in other states, I didn’t have the courage to go DIY with my wedding. I am so jealous of all the brides who make such cool, unique stuff!

      • October 9, 2010 12:47 pm

For realz! We’re gonna try it…but we may end up buying fancy antique cake stands. Who knows. My brain can’t comprehend which venue to pick yet….this is a little ways out.

  6. October 6, 2010 10:13 pm

I’m with you on the cute tutorials that are great for someone else, just not us. There are lots of DIY projects I fawn over, but could never imagine doing. I really like the painted tubes you posted, but again, not for us either. Maybe I’m just too lazy. 😉

I have been planning for my wedding comin this Nov. So far… it has been a lot of work! I’m having so much trouble sourcing for materials to diy, all the more harder when I’m limited to a budget!

    • October 8, 2010 5:38 pm

I definitely get it…Believe it or not $10k is a totally small budget for Chicago…which I found ridiculous too…we’re actually shooting for about $5k for a rockout DJ’d dance party for way too many guests..

  19. October 8, 2010 12:08 pm

Your style seems totally adorable. =) Have you ever seen this project from design sponge?

I love the embroidery. It’s really cute. The heart with the initials is very cute. Also, I like the little thing with the butterflies on it. Those are also cute. I enjoyed reading this, thank you for posting it.

  21. October 8, 2010 1:21 pm

I was going to suggest to start hitting antique shops and fairs to find those cake stand but Sarah beat me to it. Still, many great suggestions here. Congrats on getting freshly pressed.

  22. October 8, 2010 1:49 pm

cute cuTE CUTE! I’ve been mulling over cross stitch ideas…how timely! Good luck on your wedding plans, how are you finding time to blog?? I did my wedding homemade this past June and it was WAY time consuming. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  23. October 8, 2010 1:49 pm

I’m taking the butterfly rice tossers idea for my wedding. TOO CUTE. It’s the little things people come up with that both fascinate me and make me smile.

I like your creativity and endeavors to diy as much as possible, but $10k?! for a wedding?! Sorry, I cannot fathom that… I cannot wrap my mind around spending that much money on a wedding – and neither could/can my wife. I have a step-cousin who spent $20k for his wedding in NYC. Even more absurd.

We went for a small wedding, spent less than $1,5oo for the wedding, reception and honeymoon – with around 30 guests.

Keep doing the creative things though. Makes your wedding all the more yours, and not some planner’s.

    • October 8, 2010 5:54 pm

Thanks…and I definitely know. We decided we wanted all of our friends and family there..that that was the most important thing. Our guest list is huge for our budget and the prices for weddings in Chicago are SO ridiculously inflated. We’re actually shooting for about $5k, and think we might make it…we just have $10k to work with.

I definitely understand your qualm…it’s upsetting us too…haha. We’re cutting corners at every possible angle, including our precious guest list.

Oh this is such a great post!!! I love the Geek Out: DIY Edition. How adorable is that stictched heart with the initials in it – yep, I wanna make…but seriously I want to make all of them!

How fabulous is your grandma! Yeah for her!!! I have girls night every wednesday night with my great aunt whose is 86 – it’s my favorite night of the week 🙂 And while she is not a quilter, she does belong to a book club, volunteers, and is part of the Ladies Auxillary – I’m telling you it keeps her young…as does quilting for your grandma I’m sure!!

    xoxo

What a wonderful blog! With regard to throwing rice – we substituted rose petals at our wedding. It was summer, and some of the wedding party gathered fallen pink and red petals at a local nursery. It was pretty, free, and painless! Best of luck with your wedding; I’m sure it will be as charming as you are.

    • October 9, 2010 12:41 pm

Definitely! Thanks so much! {Blush} Rose petals are beautiful! I think we’re probably gonna end up with sparklers… thanks again1

your blog is so gorgeous! I’m always on project wedding, ruffled vintage weddings… but its great to see an individual couple create a site like this just for their own wedding. beautiful – wish you all the luck in the world x x

    • October 9, 2010 12:40 pm

OOOH girl, don’t even play. Ruffled and Project Wedding can steal away an entire afternoon sometimes…If you want more, more, more…sadly, most of us do, check out Green Wedding Shoes, 100 Layer Cake – any of the blogs in the blogroll to the right for “pretties”….but for real, check out the ones under kick-ass couples. There are some couples with far cooler thoughts rolling around in their wedding planning heads! Worth a shot. Loved your blog!

  35. October 9, 2010 11:15 am

This is really cool, especially the 2-D items. I liked everything and want to see more as you plan.

  36. October 9, 2010 1:45 pm

I think it is lovely to go against the generic wedding idea, instead choose items that portray the couple and not what is ‘trendy’.

what a lovely blog! full of delights. keep it up 🙂

  44. October 11, 2010 12:46 pm

I’m actually working on cake stands just like that this weekend! I found the idea originally from Pizzazzerie/Sweets Indeed, and fell immediately in love. I could never find cake stands I loved in my price range, especially since I need 3 of them, but I was able to find candlesticks for $5-7 from Ross and Home Goods, and normal-sized plates for $1.50 from Walmart, plus a much larger plate for Michael’s grooms cake for $14 at Home Goods. Overall, I spent about $50 on materials for 3 stands, and they’re going to be exactly what I’m looking for 🙂 I’m sure I’ll blog it when the project is done.

  45. October 11, 2010 3:02 pm

Hi, my name is Jessica and have a cake stand habit. My small collection started due to my wedding tribute to my late Grandmother, a cake buffet (she used to bake a number cakes for the holidays and called it her ”festival of cakes’). Let’s just say it’s a little addicting. If you’re so inclined, you can also try HomeGoods and eBay for some finds. I plan on using my cake stands for home decor (when the time to decorate comes).

So to make a long story short, I’m digging those cake stands…

    • October 11, 2010 5:05 pm

For SURE thanks for the tips Jessica! I’ll check out HomeGoods and maybe…WorldMarket if I’m feeling a little more spendy…Tempting.
